Tom Dispatch serializes “9-11: Was There an Alternative?”
September 8, 2011
There has never been any reason to doubt what the FBI believed in mid-2002, but that leaves us far from the proof of guilt required in civilized societies — and whatever the evidence might be, it does not warrant murdering a suspect who could, it seems, have been easily apprehended and brought to trial. Much the same is true of evidence provided since.

Eva Gabrielsson discusses aftermath of Norway attacks on Democracy Now!
July 28, 2011
“In the aftermath of the Norway attacks, we look at the work of Stieg Larsson, an author known less for his extensive research into right-wing extremism in Scandavia and Europe than for his international blockbuster books, published after his death and known as the Millennium Trilogy: “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire,” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.” As part of his passion to “counteract the growth of the extreme right and the white power-culture in schools and among young people,” Larsson founded the Swedish Expo Foundation and edited its magazine, Expo. We go to Stockholm, Sweden, to speak with Larsson’s lifelong partner, Eva Gabrielsson, about the research they did together before his death.” — From the Democracy Now! website

After Borders, another media empire falls: News Corp
July 22, 2011
“News Corp. owns a number of outlets, including Fox Broadcasting Company, Fox News Channel, the National Geographic Channel, HarperCollins, TV Guide, the Weekly Standard, the New York Post, the Wall Street Journal, as well as the film studios 20th Century Fox and Fox Searchlight. News Corp.’s dominant standing in the U.S. media received a major boost in the early 1990s when the Federal Communications Commissions waived a regulation meant to curb media consolidation.”

Ralph Nader on Democracy Now!: Obama is a “political coward”
July 22, 2011
“[Cordray] is no Elizabeth Warren. He doesn’t have her communication skills,” says Nader. “She is a rare find. And by throwing her overboard, Obama has signaled to hundreds of good, smart people all over the country, who would like to turn our government around and make it stand for the people, that they may be too good for the president, they may be too good for the rogue Republicans.” — Ralph Nader, Democracy Now!

Slavoj Žižek and Julian Assange speak with Amy Goodman
July 1, 2011
“Focusing on the ethics and philosophy behind WikiLeaks’ work, the conversation will provide a rare opportunity to hear two of the world’s most prominent thinkers discuss some of the most pressing issues of our time. It will also mark the publication of the paperback edition of Slavoj Žižek’s book, Living in the End Times, in which he argues that new ways of using and sharing information, in particular WikiLeaks, are one of a number of harbingers of the end of global capitalism as we know it.” — Democracy Now! website

Court Rules Mumia Abu-Jamal’s Death Sentence is Unconstitutional
May 4, 2011
From Democracy Now!: “The case of Pennsylvania death row prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal took a surprising turn Tuesday when the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously declared his death sentence unconstitutional. It is the second time the court has agreed with a lower court judge who set aside Abu-Jamal’s death sentence after finding jurors were given confusing instructions that encouraged them to choose death rather than a life sentence.”

David Swanson on Democracy Now: “Our elected representatives have to represent who we are right now”
October 7, 2009
On Wednesday morning, October 7, David Swanson spoke to Democracy Now about his arrest, about the Obama administration’s broken promises on Iraq and Afghanistan, about what citizens can do to influence Congress to fulfill its Constitutional obligation to check the power of the executive branch, and on his conviction: “The public was there [for the war in Afghanistan, as opposed to the war in Iraq] before the election, and now we have the majority of the public against both wars . . . Our elected representatives have to represent who we are right now, not who we were at the most recent election.”
