Mickey Z. interviews Mickey Huff on Project Censored
November 18, 2010
“Project Censored, quite simply, seeks media accountability. In our view, the only valid justification for declining a news story is that in a medium limited by time and space, another news story was simply more important to the people of the community, whether local, national or international. While admittedly a subjective process, it is nonetheless, a process to be undertaken by the news people themselves (the investigative journalists and editors), NOT by the managers and CEOs of their “parent company.” No professional journalist or researcher should ever have to face the destruction of his or her career (or life) simply because they wanted to tell the truth.” —Mickey Huff, in conversation with Mickey Z

David Swanson and Ted Rall: A Debate on Violence
October 29, 2010
“I have to reject the notion that I am a “self-identified pacifist” for the simple reason that I haven’t self-identified as a pacifist. The only alternatives are not to be an advocate for war and violence or to be dead. There is another possibility: that of being a nonviolent activist.” —David Swanson
“. . . Movements that seek radical political change—the restructuring of society and/or the redistribution of wealth and power—are rarely successful when they limit themselves to nonviolent tactics. I say “rarely” because anything is possible. But I’m a student of history and I can’t think of any. ” —Ted Rall

San Francisco Bay Guardian on Censored 2011
September 17, 2010
It’s a brave new world of media consumption, but Project Censored’s mission hasn’t really changed. More than ever, people need help sifting through this cacophony to figure out what they truly need to know. — San Francisco Bay Guardian

Tony Hefner interviewed in the San Antonio Current
September 9, 2010
You left to go get religious training?
I started going to church then. And that’s where I realized people weren’t prejudiced. That people really loved people and [I saw] a whole different realm of things … treating you like you was a human being. That’s why whenever I seen this going on at that detention facility, all these flashbacks kept coming back.
Like what?
These poor, immigrant people are just trying to make a living, trying to please people, and still try to take care of their families. A lot of them are just migrant workers. I talked to a lot of them in the detention facility who knew English real well, because my Spanish was terrible. They’re just hard-working people who … for hundreds of years they’ve been crossing the border. And they come over here and they work in our fields and they pick our fruits. … I mean, those are jobs that most Americans don’t want. Oh yeah, they want the supervisor job where they can boss the people around, where they don’t have to get out there and pick the fruit and work in some of these different places.

Ted Rall: WikiLeaks will end the Afghan War
August 4, 2010
“An appalling irresponsible act.” That’s how General James Nattis, fresh at the helm of U.S. Central Command, characterizes the release of more than 76,000 classified Pentagon reports released by the website WikiLeaks.
You may recall that the Pentagon, headquarters of the Department of Defense, is the same outfit that loaded $24 billion in $100 bills onto shrinkwrapped pallets and loaded the cash onto C-130 transport planes bound for Iraq — guarded by enlisted men who earn $20,000 a year. Not one of those Benjamins has ever heard from since. Which, given that the money was supposed to be paid to corrupt tribal sheikhs, is just as well. Don’t be surprised if you see contractors installing one of those great a new Gunnite pool at the house belonging to your recently discharged veteran neighbor.
So anyway, when a Pentagon biggie calls someone irresponsible, take them seriously. These guys know from irresponsibility. — Ted Rall, reblogged from Commondreams.org

Chris Hedges on the Howard Zinn FBI file
August 3, 2010
By the end of the file one walks away with a profound respect for Zinn and a deep distaste for the buffoonish goons in the FBI who followed and monitored him. … We are amassing unprecedented volumes of secret files, and carrying out extensive surveillance and harassment, as stupid and useless as those that were directed against Zinn. And a few decades from now maybe we will be able to examine the work of the latest generation of dimwitted investigators who have been unleashed upon us in secret by the tens of thousands. Did any of the agents who followed Zinn ever realize how they wasted their time? Do those following us around comprehend how manipulated they are? Do they understand that their primary purpose, as it was with Zinn, is not to prevent terrorism but discredit and destroy social movements as well as protect the elite from those who would expose them? — Chris Hedges

Daily Texan on Tony Hefner and Between the Fences
August 3, 2010
Hefner says that to his knowledge there has not been an improvement in the conditions at the detention center and that in 2006 there were 108 detainees who died inside the facility for unknown reasons. Beginning January of this year, detainees organized a hunger strike, protesting conditions at the center and the frequency of transfers. The abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq received national media attention and launched a government investigation. Hefner says he witnessed similar abuses at Port Isabel, but that the detention center is receiving less attention because of the detainee’s immigration status.
“Because these are undocumented aliens, people just don’t care,” Hefner said. “Even though our government is against human rights abuse, they still do not enforce it in these compounds at these detention facilities.” —The Daily Texan
